Mới

Thấy hòn đá đã lăn ra khỏi mồ, nhưng bước vào, các bà không thấy xác Chúa Giêsu. Đang khi các bà còn ngơ ngác không hiểu việc đó, thì có hai người đứng gần các bà, y phục sáng chói. Các bà kinh hãi cắm mặt xuống đất (Lc 24,2-5)

...Newness often makes us fearful, including the newness which God brings us, the newness which God asks of us. We are like the Apostles in the Gospel: often we would prefer to hold on to our own security, to stand in front of a tomb, to think about someone who has died, someone who ultimately lives on only as a memory, like the great historical figures from the past. We are afraid of God’s surprises; we are afraid of God’s surprises! He always surprises us!

Dear brothers and sisters, let us not be closed to the newness that God wants to bring into our lives! Are we often weary, disheartened and sad? Do we feel weighed down by our sins? Do we think that we won’t be able to cope? Let us not close our hearts, let us not lose confidence, let us never give up: there are no situations which God cannot change, there is no sin which he cannot forgive if only we open ourselves to him.

...Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome him as a friend, with trust: he is life! If up till now you have kept him at a distance, step forward. He will receive you with open arms.

...And the two men in dazzling clothes tell them something of crucial importance: “Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee… And they remembered his words” (Lk 24:6,8). They are asked to remember their encounter with Jesus, to remember his words, his actions, his life; and it is precisely this loving remembrance of their experience with the Master that enables the women to master their fear and to bring the message of the Resurrection to the Apostles and all the others (cf. Lk 24:9).

...May he teach us each day not to look among the dead for the Living One!

Nét đẹp thập giá

"Ở đó họ đóng đinh Người trên thập giá cùng với hai người khác nữa: mỗi người một bên, còn Chúa Giêsu thì ở giữa. Philatô cũng viết một tấm bảng và sai đóng trên thập giá. Bảng mang những hàng chữ này: "Giêsu, Nadarét, vua dân Do-thái". Nhiều người Do-thái đọc được bảng đó, vì nơi Chúa Giêsu chịu đóng đinh thì gần thành phố, mà bảng viết thì bằng tiếng Do-thái, Hy-lạp và La-tinh." (Ga 19,18-20)

Công trình tạo dựng của Thiên Chúa tuyệt đẹp. Công trình cứu độ của Ngài còn đẹp hơn gấp bội. Đó là nét đẹp của thập giá, tột đỉnh của tình yêu tự hiến.

"...The evangelization has a mystical origin; it is a gift that comes from the cross of Christ, from that open side, from that blood and from that water. The love of Christ, like that of the Trinity of which it is the historical manifestation, is "diffusivum sui", it tends to expand and reach all creatures, "especially those most needy of thy mercy." Christian evangelization is not a conquest, not propaganda; it is the gift of God to the world in his Son Jesus. It is to give the Head the joy of feeling life flow from his heart towards his body, to the point of vivivfying its most distant limbs.

We must do everything possible so that the Church may never look like that complicated and cluttered castle described by Kafka, and the message may come out of it as free and joyous as when the messenger began his run. We know what the impediments are that can restrain the messenger: dividing walls, starting with those that separate the various Christian churches from one another, the excess of bureaucracy, the residue of past ceremonials, laws and disputes, now only debris.

In Revelation, Jesus says that He stands at the door and knocks (Rev 3:20). Sometimes, as noted by our Pope Francis, he does not knock to enter, but knocks from within to go out. To reach out to the "existential suburbs of sin, suffering, injustice, religious ignorance and indifference, and of all forms of misery."As happens with certain old buildings. Over the centuries, to adapt to the needs of the moment, they become filled with partitions, staircases, rooms and closets. The time comes when we realize that all these adjustments no longer meet the current needs, but rather are an obstacle, so we must have the courage to knock them down and return the building to the simplicity and linearity of its origins. This was the mission that was received one day by a man who prayed before the Crucifix of San Damiano: "Go, Francis, and repair my Church".

"Who could ever be up to this task?" wondered aghast the Apostle before the superhuman task of being in the world "the fragrance of Christ"; and here is his reply, that still applies today: "We're not ourselves able to think something as if it came from us; our ability comes from God. He has made us to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; because the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life"(2 Cor 2:16; 3:5-6). May the Holy Spirit, in this moment in which a new time is opening for the Church, full of hope, reawaken in men who are at the window the expectancy of the message, and in the messengers the will to make it reach them, even at the cost of their life."

Dear priests,

may God the Father renew in us

the Spirit of holiness

with whom we have been anointed.



May he renew his Spirit in our hearts,

that this anointing may spread to everyone,

even to those “outskirts”

where our faithful people most look for it

and most appreciate it.

May our people sense

that we are the Lord’s disciples;

may they feel that their names are written

upon our priestly vestments

and that we seek no other identity;

and may they receive

through our words and deeds

the oil of gladness which Jesus,

the Anointed One, came to bring us.

Pope Francis washes women's feet in break with church law?


In his most significant break with tradition yet, Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of two young women at a juvenile detention centre - a surprising departure from church rules that restrict the Holy Thursday ritual to men.



No pope has ever washed the feet of a woman before, and Francis' gesture sparked a debate among some conservatives and liturgical purists, who lamented he had set a "questionable example." Liberals welcomed the move as a sign of greater inclusiveness in the church.

Speaking to the young offenders, including Muslims and Orthodox Christians, Francis said that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion in a gesture of love and service.

"This is a symbol, it is a sign. Washing your feet means I am at your service," Francis told the group, aged 14 to 21, at the Casal del Marmo detention facility in Rome.

"Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches us," the pope said. "This is what I do. And I do it with my heart. I do this with my heart because it is my duty. As a priest and bishop, I must be at your service."

In a video released by the Vatican, the 76-year-old Francis was shown kneeling on the stone floor as he poured water from a silver chalice over the feet of a dozen youths: black, white, male, female, even feet with tattoos. Then, after drying each one with a cotton towel, he bent over and kissed it.

Previous popes carried out the Holy Thursday rite in Rome's grand St. John Lateran basilica, choosing 12 priests to represent the 12 apostles whose feet Christ washed during the Last Supper before his crucifixion.



Before he became pope, as archbishop of Buenos Aires, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio celebrated the ritual foot-washing in jails, hospitals or hospices - part of his ministry to the poorest and most marginalized of society. He often involved women. Photographs show him washing the feet of a woman holding her newborn child in her arms.


That Francis would include women in his inaugural Holy Thursday Mass as pope was remarkable, however, given that current liturgical rules exclude women.

Canon lawyer Edward Peters, who is an adviser to the Holy See's top court, noted in a blog that the Congregation for Divine Worship sent a letter to bishops in 1988 making clear that "the washing of the feet of chosen men ... represents the service and charity of Christ, who came 'not to be served, but to serve.'"

While bishops have successfully petitioned Rome over the years for an exemption to allow women to participate, the rules on the issue are clear, Peters said.

"By disregarding his own law in this matter, Francis violates, of course, no divine directive," Peters wrote. "What he does do, I fear, is set a questionable example."

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said he didn't want to wade into a canonical dispute over the matter. However, he noted that in a "grand solemn celebration" of the rite, only men are included because Christ washed the feet of his 12 apostles, all of whom were male.

"Here, the rite was for a small, unique community made up also of women," Lombardi wrote in an email. "Excluding the girls would have been inopportune in light of the simple aim of communicating a message of love to all, in a group that certainly didn't include experts on liturgical rules."

Others on the more liberal side of the debate welcomed the example Francis set.

"The pope's washing the feet of women is hugely significant because including women in this part of the Holy Thursday Mass has been frowned on - and even banned - in some dioceses," said the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and author of "The Jesuit Guide."

"It shows the all-embracing love of Christ, who ministered to all he met: man or woman, slave or free, Jew or Gentile."

For some, restricting the rite to men is in line with the church's restriction on ordaining women priests. Church teaching holds that only men should be ordained because Christ's apostles were male.

"This is about the ordination of women, not about their feet," wrote the Rev. John Zuhlsdorf, a traditionalist blogger. Liberals "only care about the washing of the feet of women, because ultimately they want women to do the washing."

Still, Francis has made clear he doesn't favour ordaining women. In his 2011 book, "On Heaven and Earth," then-Cardinal Bergoglio said there were solid theological reasons why the priesthood was reserved to men: "Because Jesus was a man."

On this Holy Thursday, however, Francis had a simple message for the young inmates, whom he greeted one-by-one after the Mass, giving each an Easter egg.

"Don't lose hope," Francis said. "Understand? With hope you can always go on."

One young man then asked why he had come to visit them.

Francis responded that it was to "help me to be humble, as a bishop should be."

The gesture, he said, came "from my heart. Things from the heart don't have an explanation."

Giao ước

Trước ngày Lễ Vượt Qua, Chúa Giêsu biết đã đến giờ Mình phải bỏ thế gian mà về cùng Chúa Cha, Người vốn yêu thương những kẻ thuộc về mình còn đang ở thế gian, thì đã yêu thương họ đến cùng. (Ga 13,1-2)

God's Covenant

God made a covenant with us. The word covenant means "coming together." God wants to come together with us.

In many of the stories in the Hebrew Bible, we see that God appears as a God who defends us against our enemies, protects us against dangers, and guides us to freedom. God is God-for-us.

When Jesus comes a new dimension of the covenant is revealed. In Jesus, God is born, grows to maturity, lives, suffers, and dies as we do. God is God-with-us.

Finally, when Jesus leaves he promises the Holy Spirit. In the Holy Spirit, God reveals the full depth of the covenant. God wants to be as close to us as our breath. God wants to breathe in us, so that all we say, think and do is completely inspired by God. God is God-within-us.

Thus God's covenant reveals to us to how much God loves us.

Speaking poorly of someone else is equivalent to selling them. Like Judas, who sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.
And it was precisely by drawing inspiration from the Gospel passage from Matthew which foretells the betrayal of Judas Iscariot that Pope Francis – in his brief Homily at the Mass he celebrated on Wednesday morning, 27 March, in the Chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae – put people on guard against gossip with an explicit invitation: “Never speak poorly of other people”.

(Vatican Radio/VIS) The Mass of the Lord's Supper that Pope Francis will celebrate on Holy Thursday in the chapel of the Casal del Marmo Penitential Institute for Minors (IPM) will be, by his express desire, very simple.

Around 10 girls and 40 boys will take part in the Mass. The Pope will wash the feet of 12 of them, who will be chosen from different nationalities and diverse religious confessions. The youth will also say the readings and the prayers of the faithful.

After the Mass, the Pope will meet with the youth and the IPM's personnel in the Institute's gym. Around 150 persons are expected to attend, including the Minister for Justice, Paola Severino, accompanied by the Head of the Department of Justice for Minors, Caterina Chinnici, the Commander of the Institute's Penitentiary Police, Saulo Patrizi, and the Institute's director, Liana Giambartolomei.

The youth will give the Pope a wooden crucifix and kneeler, which they made themselves in the Institute's workshop. The Holy Father will bring Easter eggs and “colomba” (the traditional Italian Easter cake in the shape of a dove) for all.

Given the intimate nature of the pastoral visit, journalists will be restricted to the area outside the building and no live coverage will be transmitted.

Chờ

Giuđa kẻ phản bội cũng thưa Người rằng: "Thưa Thầy, có phải con chăng?" Chúa đáp: "Đúng như con nói".


Kiên nhẫn

Pope Francis was inspired by the scene of today's Gospel, in which Judas criticizes Mary, sister of Lazarus, for anointing Jesus' feet with three hundred grams of precious perfume: it would be better - says Judas – to sell it and give the proceeds to the poor.

John noted in the Gospel that Judas was not interested in the poor, but in stealing the money. Yet, Pope Francis said, "Jesus did not say: 'You are a thief.’”. Instead “he was patient with Judas, trying to draw him closer through patience, his love.

During Holy Week, we would do well to think of the patience of God, the patience that God has with each one of us, with our weaknesses, our sins. " "The patience of God is a mystery!", Pope Francis said. "How much patience he has with us! We do so many things, but He is patient”.

The Ways to Self-knowledge

"Know yourself" is good advice. But to know ourselves doesn't mean to analyse ourselves. Sometimes we want to know ourselves as if we were machines that could be taken apart and put back together at will. At certain critical times in our lives it might be helpful to explore in some detail the events that led us to our crises, but we make a mistake when we think that we can ever completely understand ourselves and explain the full meaning of our lives to others.

Solitude, silence, and prayer are often the best ways to self-knowledge. Not because they offer solutions for the complexity of our lives but because they bring us in touch with our sacred center, where God dwells. That sacred center may not be analysed. It is the place of adoration, thanksgiving, and praise.

Không tiếc

Simon Phêrô hỏi Người: "Thưa Thầy, Thầy đi đâu?" Chúa Giêsu trả lời: "Nơi Thầy đi, nay con chưa thể theo tới đó được, nhưng sau này con sẽ theo Thầy". Phêrô thưa lại: "Tại sao con lại không theo Thầy ngay bây giờ được! Con sẽ liều mạng sống con vì Thầy". Chúa Giêsu nói: "Con liều mạng sống vì Thầy ư? Thật, Thầy nói thật cho con biết: trước khi gà gáy, con đã chối Thầy ba lần".(Ga 13,36-38)

Bấy giờ Maria lấy một cân dầu thơm, dầu cam tùng hảo hạng, và xức chân Chúa Giêsu, rồi lấy tóc mình mà lau. Hương thơm toả đầy nhà. Một môn đệ là Giuđa Iscariô, kẻ sẽ phản nộp Người, liền nói: "Sao không bán dầu thơm đó lấy ba trăm đồng mà cho người nghèo khó?" Hắn nói thế không phải vì lo lắng cho người nghèo khó đâu, mà vì hắn là tên trộm cắp, lại được giữ túi tiền, nên bớt xén các khoản tiền người ta bỏ vào đó. (Ga 12,3-7)

Maria không tiếc gì với Chúa, bà đổ cả một cân dầu cam tùng hảo hạng chỉ để xức chân Chúa.

Phêrô cũng chẳng tiếc gì với Chúa: Con liều mạng sống vì Thầy. Đấy là cái tâm của ông, dù sau đó ông yếu đuối chối Thầy...

Giuđa thì so đo tính toán, bớt xén của chung để giữ cho mình, cuối cùng đi đến kết thúc bi đát.

Còn con thì thế nào? Vì yêu, con cho Chúa hết, không tiếc rẻ điều gì... thật khó nói được câu này!
Nhưng ít ra, con cũng cố làm được một chút gì đó, trong hiện tại, vì yêu Chúa, vì yêu thương anh em con...
Xin được cố gắng từng chút một, sửa đổi từng chút một...
