Pope Francis was inspired by the scene of today's Gospel, in which Judas criticizes Mary, sister of Lazarus, for anointing Jesus' feet with three hundred grams of precious perfume: it would be better - says Judas – to sell it and give the proceeds to the poor.

John noted in the Gospel that Judas was not interested in the poor, but in stealing the money. Yet, Pope Francis said, "Jesus did not say: 'You are a thief.’”. Instead “he was patient with Judas, trying to draw him closer through patience, his love.

During Holy Week, we would do well to think of the patience of God, the patience that God has with each one of us, with our weaknesses, our sins. " "The patience of God is a mystery!", Pope Francis said. "How much patience he has with us! We do so many things, but He is patient”.

The Ways to Self-knowledge

"Know yourself" is good advice. But to know ourselves doesn't mean to analyse ourselves. Sometimes we want to know ourselves as if we were machines that could be taken apart and put back together at will. At certain critical times in our lives it might be helpful to explore in some detail the events that led us to our crises, but we make a mistake when we think that we can ever completely understand ourselves and explain the full meaning of our lives to others.

Solitude, silence, and prayer are often the best ways to self-knowledge. Not because they offer solutions for the complexity of our lives but because they bring us in touch with our sacred center, where God dwells. That sacred center may not be analysed. It is the place of adoration, thanksgiving, and praise.

Simon Phêrô hỏi Người: "Thưa Thầy, Thầy đi đâu?" Chúa Giêsu trả lời: "Nơi Thầy đi, nay con chưa thể theo tới đó được, nhưng sau này con sẽ theo Thầy". Phêrô thưa lại: "Tại sao con lại không theo Thầy ngay bây giờ được! Con sẽ liều mạng sống con vì Thầy". Chúa Giêsu nói: "Con liều mạng sống vì Thầy ư? Thật, Thầy nói thật cho con biết: trước khi gà gáy, con đã chối Thầy ba lần".(Ga 13,36-38)

Bấy giờ Maria lấy một cân dầu thơm, dầu cam tùng hảo hạng, và xức chân Chúa Giêsu, rồi lấy tóc mình mà lau. Hương thơm toả đầy nhà. Một môn đệ là Giuđa Iscariô, kẻ sẽ phản nộp Người, liền nói: "Sao không bán dầu thơm đó lấy ba trăm đồng mà cho người nghèo khó?" Hắn nói thế không phải vì lo lắng cho người nghèo khó đâu, mà vì hắn là tên trộm cắp, lại được giữ túi tiền, nên bớt xén các khoản tiền người ta bỏ vào đó. (Ga 12,3-7)

Maria không tiếc gì với Chúa, bà đổ cả một cân dầu cam tùng hảo hạng chỉ để xức chân Chúa.

Phêrô cũng chẳng tiếc gì với Chúa: Con liều mạng sống vì Thầy. Đấy là cái tâm của ông, dù sau đó ông yếu đuối chối Thầy...

Giuđa thì so đo tính toán, bớt xén của chung để giữ cho mình, cuối cùng đi đến kết thúc bi đát.

Còn con thì thế nào? Vì yêu, con cho Chúa hết, không tiếc rẻ điều gì... thật khó nói được câu này!
Nhưng ít ra, con cũng cố làm được một chút gì đó, trong hiện tại, vì yêu Chúa, vì yêu thương anh em con...
Xin được cố gắng từng chút một, sửa đổi từng chút một...

Lễ Lá

"Khi vào thành Giêrusalem, Chúa Giêsu đã được dân chúng chào đón với niềm vui lớn lao" - ĐTC nói. "Kitô hữu có thể không bao giờ buồn! Đừng bao giờ gây thất vọng! Chúng ta vui không phải vì sở hữu quá nhiều, mà do đã gặp được Chúa Giêsu"...

Not Breaking the Bruised Reeds

Some of us tend to do away with things that are slightly damaged. Instead of repairing them we say: "Well, I don't have time to fix it, I might as well throw it in the garbage can and buy a new one."

Often we also treat people this way. We say: "Well, he has a problem with drinking; well, she is quite depressed; well, they have mismanaged their business...we'd better not take the risk of working with them."

When we dismiss people out of hand because of their apparent woundedness, we stunt their lives by ignoring their gifts, which are often buried in their wounds.

We all are bruised reeds, whether our bruises are visible or not.

The compassionate life is the life in which we believe that strength is hidden in weakness and that true community is a fellowship of the weak. (Nouwen G)

Our Lives, Sowing Times

Our short lives on earth are sowing time. If there were no resurrection of the dead, everything we live on earth would come to nothing. How can we believe in a God who loves us unconditionally if all the joys and pains of our lives are in vain, vanishing in the earth with our mortal flesh and bones? Because God loves us unconditionally, from eternity to eternity, God cannot allow our bodies - the same as that in which Jesus, his Son and our savior, appeared to us - to be lost in final destruction.

No, life on earth is the time when the seeds of the risen body are planted. Paul says: "What is sown is perishable, but what is raised is imperishable; what is sown is contemptible but what is raised is glorious; what is sown is weak, but what is raised is powerful; what is sown is a natural body, and what is raised is a spiritual body" (1 Corinthians 15:42-44). This wonderful knowledge that nothing we live in our bodies is lived in vain holds a call for us to live every moment as a seed of eternity.

"Dầu các ngươi không muốn tin Ta, cũng hãy tin vào các việc đó, để các ngươi biết và tin rằng: Cha ở trong Ta, và Ta ở trong Cha." (Ga 10,38)

Chúa tìm cách giúp cho dân Do Thái nhận ra Chúa là ai, để họ cũng nhận ra họ là ai. Ngài là Con Một Chúa Cha, luôn hiệp nhất với Cha: "Dầu các ngươi không muốn tin Ta, cũng hãy tin vào các việc đó, để các ngươi biết và tin rằng: Cha ở trong Ta, và Ta ở trong Cha." Và Ngài cũng muốn ta nên một với Ngài, để được như thế, được ở trong Cha.

Xin cho con nhận ra niềm hạnh phúc được ở trong Cha, khi nên một với Giêsu.

Claiming the Sacredness of Our Being

Are we friends with ourselves? Do we love who we are? These are important questions because we cannot develop good friendships with others unless we have befriended ourselves. How then do we befriend ourselves?

We have to start by acknowledging the truth of ourselves. We are beautiful but also limited, rich but also poor, generous but also worried about our security.

Yet beyond all that we are people with souls, sparks of the divine. To acknowledge the truth of ourselves is to claim the sacredness of our being, without fully understanding it. Our deepest being escapes our own mental or emotional grasp. But when we trust that our souls are embraced by a loving God, we can befriend ourselves and reach out to others in loving relationships.
