Ánh sáng hay bóng tối?

Sau nhiều tháng tranh cãi gay gắt, sau nhiều cuộc biểu tình chống đối dữ dội, hôm nay, 23/04/2013, vào lúc 17 giờ, giờ Paris, Quốc hội Pháp thông qua dự luật công nhận hôn nhân đồng giới. Pháp trở thành quốc gia thứ 14 trên thế giới -và là quốc gia thứ 9 ở châu Âu - cho các cặp đồng tính sống với nhau như những cặp vợ chồng khác giới tính.

...Nhưng cho dù luật được thông qua, những người chống đối hôn nhân đồng tính chưa chịu buông vũ khí, tiếp tục biểu tình trước Quốc hội và sẽ tiếp tục xuống đường trong những ngày tới, với hy vọng là áp lực gia tăng của đường phố sẽ khiến chính phủ lùi bước, hủy bỏ luật hôn nhân đồng tính.

"Les catholiques posent des questions essentielles pour la vérité et pour l'avenir de notre société", par les évêques de la province de Rennes

1. Les catholiques, animés par l'Évangile, rejettent toute discrimination à l'égard des personnes homosexuelles ! L'Évangile de Dieu est une force de paix, de douceur et de liberté dans la vérité et l'amour, pour reconnaître l'égale dignité de chaque personne.

2. Mais le projet de loi sur le « mariage pour tous » suscite la réprobation d'un très grand nombre car, en voulant rendre égal ce qui de soi est différent, il nie une donnée fondamentale que la loi civile n'a pas inventée mais reconnue : la différence homme-femme est au cœur du mariage et de la filiation. La loi civile, qui ne doit pas se mêler de gérer les sentiments, a la mission de protéger cette donnée anthropologique reconnue par la sagesse de tant de cultures à travers les siècles.

3. Beaucoup de responsables religieux, d'intellectuels, de professionnels de la famille et d'associations familiales se sont exprimés dans ce sens. Avec eux, nous continuons de souhaiter un débat organisé et serein, car lui seul permet à la paix sociale de grandir, sans risque de divisions et de violences. Quel français serait contre un tel débat pour chercher les lois qui soient justes ?

4. Les catholiques de Bretagne qui, avec d'autres bretons, iront manifester le dimanche 13 janvier sont paisibles et non rétrogrades. Ils ont l'impression de ne pas avoir été entendus. Ils posent des questions essentielles pour la vérité et pour l'avenir de notre société, dans le respect de tous. Ils expriment leurs convictions, qui ne sont ni de droite ni de gauche, sur la spécificité du mariage et sur le respect primordial dû aux enfants et à leur filiation.

5. Comme chaque dimanche, les catholiques se réuniront pour prier Dieu, Lui qui s'est manifesté à Noël dans la petitesse d'un Enfant. Notre prière demande que les adultes soient éclairés et fortifiés dans leurs responsabilités, en raison de la confiance que mettent en eux les enfants.

...It is true that God has made his entire holy people a royal priesthood in Christ.
Nevertheless, our great Priest himself, Jesus Christ, chose certain disciples to carry out publicly in his name, and on behalf of mankind, a priestly office in the Church.
For Christ was sent by the Father and he in turn sent the Apostles into the world, so that through them and their successors, the Bishops, he might continue to exercise his office of Teacher, Priest, and Shepherd.

ĐGH dọn bánh săng-uých cho lính gác

The surprising greatness of this new Pope Francis is in the small things.

For example, the ability to say, “Brothers and sisters, good evening,” instead of appealing to the centuries, the Scriptures or the universe to present himself to the world. To wear an iron cross of instead of a golden one. To wash the feet of the prisoners.

Or yet, to care for the Swiss Guard who guards the door of his apartment in Casa Santa Marta every night until dawn.

A few days ago, at dawn, the time the Pope wakes up, he came out to the corridor, and he found in front of his door the sentry, a Swiss Guard, standing with his halberd at attention.

He asked him: “And what are you doing here? Have you been up all night?”

“Yes,” replied the guard with deference and a bit surprised.

“On your feet?”

“Your Holiness, my duty since I took over from my companion.”

“And aren’t you tired?”

“It’s my duty Your Holiness; I should watch for your safety.”

Pope Francis looked at him again with kindness, went back to his suite and after a minute he came out carrying a chair: “At least sit down and rest.”

The guard rolled his eyes and answered: “Santo Padre, forgive me, but I cannot! The regulations do not allow that.”

“The regulations?”

“Orders from my captain, Your Holiness.”

The Pope smiled, “Oh, really? Well, I’m the Pope and I order you to sit down.”
So, caught between the regulations and the Pope, the Swiss Guard (so much for the halberd) chose the chair.

The Pope returned to his apartment.

After a couple of minutes, the Pope came back to the Swiss Guard, still obediently seated on the chair, carrying “panino con marmellata” (Italian bread with jam) which he had prepared. Before the soldier could say anything, the Holy Father, exhibiting his Argentinean smile, told the Swiss Guard, “With all the hours spent standing on guard you must be a bit hungry.”

The Swiss Guard had no time to object because the Pope right away wished him a good bite: “Bon appetit, brother.”

At this point, you, reader, don’t you think we all have to do “the wave” with this great Pope Francis? May God conserve him for many years.

Những tiếng nói như thế này có thực sự được lắng nghe?

"Tôi biết chiên của tôi, và chiên của Tôi biết Tôi, như Chúa Cha biết Tôi, và Tôi biết Chúa Cha, và Tôi hy sinh mạng sống mình cho đoàn chiên. Chiên Tôi thì nghe tiếng Tôi, Tôi biết chúng và chúng theo Tôi." (Ga 10,14.15. 27)

Bỏ

Từ bấy giờ có nhiều môn đệ rút lui không còn theo Người nữa. Chúa Giêsu liền nói với nhóm Mười Hai rằng: "Cả các con, các con có muốn bỏ đi không? "Cả các con, các con có muốn bỏ đi không?" Simon Phêrô thưa Người: "Lạy Thầy, chúng con sẽ đi theo ai? Thầy mới có những lời ban sự sống đời đời.  Phần chúng con, chúng con tin và chúng con biết rằng: Thầy là Đấng Kitô, Con Thiên Chúa".(Ga 6,66-69)

Nhiều môn đệ đã bỏ Chúa. Giuđa bỏ Chúa. Nhiều tông đồ bỏ Chúa để trốn chạy khi Chúa bị bắt. Phêrô cũng từng chối bỏ Chúa.

Bỏ Chúa, bỏ đường ngay là điều từng xẩy ta cho mỗi người, vì yếu đuối chính là thân phận con người.
Nét đẹp của con người đó là, chính trong sự mong manh, dễ ngã đổ, họ vẫn có thể nhanh nhạy hồi tỉnh, để nhanh nhạy quay về với tình yêu và sự thật để tiến lên, bay lên...

Không ai mà không từng sa ngã. Điều quan trọng là sau đó phải tìm ra kế hoạch để cảnh giác xa tránh những cạm bẫy của bóng tối, để mỗi ngày một bớt sa ngã hơn. Đời sống tâm linh là cả một cuộc chiến. Không ý thức điều này, con sẽ sa ngã mỗi ngày một nhiều hơn, để rồi chai lỳ và không còn khả năng đứng dậy nữa.

Đánh nhau

Vợ chồng “đánh nhau” đêm qua

1g30 sáng chồng về, nồng nặc rượu. Vợ ức, xưng “mày – tao” và cãi tay đôi với chồng. Chồng tát vợ ngã vào tường. Vợ quay lại, nghiến vào bắp tay chồng. Chồng hất tay mạnh, vợ lại ngã nhào, nước mắt đã cạn khô trong lúc chồng nằm chỏng chơ trên phòng ngủ....

Đổi chiến thuật...

...Vợ đề nghị, chồng chỉ nên nhậu 1-2 lần/tháng, mỗi lần không quá 10g đêm. Hôm nào chồng đi nhậu, hai mẹ con sẽ về bên ngoại ăn tối. Nhà bà ngoại ở gần đó nên vợ sẽ để con ngủ lại với bà rồi về kiểm tra chồng. Còn hơn cứ ngồi chờ chồng rồi ôm một cục tức to đùng ở cổ họng.  
Đi nhậu về, thấy nhà cửa trống trải, chồng bảo: “Sợ quá”, vì vợ căn quá 10g mới về, phải để chồng gọi điện giục, cho chồng biết cái giá của chờ đợi.
Vợ không “già mồm” trước bất kỳ tật xấu nào của chồng. Nếu chồng mắc lỗi, vợ sẽ nói ngắn gọn thế này: “Anh làm em buồn vì đi quá 10g đấy”, “Anh làm em bực mình vì đi chân bẩn vào nhà tắm”…
Sau đó, vợ sẽ dừng lại, cái gì cần góp ý với chồng thì chọn lúc khác. Cái này nghĩ đơn giản nhưng thực hiện được thật khó. Khi tức, ai chẳng muốn nói cho bõ tức, nhất là phụ nữ, phải nói cho thật đã mới hả lòng nhưng vợ đã nghiệm ra một điều, càng nói nhiều, chồng càng tỏ thái độ bất cần hoặc thờ ơ, như không nghe thấy gì, trong khi tật xấu của chồng vẫn y nguyên.
Dần dần, cứ nghe vợ nói: “Anh làm em buồn vì…” là chồng cười rồi xin lỗi rối rít. Nếu chồng tái lỗi, nghe vợ nhắc: “Anh lại thế nhé” thì chồng cười cầu hòa ngay. Bây giờ, vợ thấy cuộc sống gia đình mình nhẹ nhõm hơn nhiều. Vợ sẽ không bao giờ còn bị chồng đánh nữa.

Giáo Hội là hiền thê của Chúa. Tình yêu hôn nhân  nhiệm mầu giữa Chúa và Giáo Hội được nuôi dưỡng và lên tới đỉnh cao trong bí tích Thánh Thể: "Thịt Ta thật là của ăn, và máu Ta thật là của uống" (Ga 6,55)

Vợ chồng muốn đạt tới đỉnh cao của tình yêu hôn nhân đều cần tới Thánh Thể. Và mọi người đều cần đỉnh cao này để đạt tới hạnh phúc tròn đầy trong tình yêu, trong mối tương quan với người khác.
Xin cho con đỉnh cao ấy...

Đã có nhiều dấn ấn trong tâm lý dân gian qua các đời rằng người Tàu hay sang đây làm các thứ tệ hại như yểm bùa, triệt long mạch và đập phá những thứ có giá trị tâm linh của người Việt.

Tuy nhiên đối với khu vực đền Hùng mà ông Lan nói ông đã ‘điền dã rất kỹ từ nửa thế kỷ nay’ thì ông chưa sưu tầm được truyền thuyết, lời kể hoặc hiện vật nào ‘chứng tỏ người Tàu đã sang đây để yểm bùa hay triệt phá gì’.

Cho nên ông Lan cho rằng phiến đá trấn yểm đặt trong đền Thượng ‘nên được di dời ra khỏi đền’ vì ‘đấy là thứ mới tạo chứ không phải có từ trước’.

Thịt

Ai đến với Ta, sẽ không hề đói; ai tin vào Ta, sẽ không hề khát bao giờ. (Ga 6,35)

Đói thể xác, đói tinh thần, đói khắp nơi.
Đến với Giêsu để khỏi đói? Đến cách nào, gặp cách nào?

To Let the Word Become Flesh

Spiritual reading is food for our souls.  
As we slowly let the words of the Bible or any spiritual book enter into our minds and descend into our hearts, we become different people.  
The Word gradually becomes flesh in us and thus transforms our whole beings.  
Thus spiritual reading is a continuing incarnation of the divine Word within us.
  
In and through Jesus, the Christ, God became flesh long ago.  
In and through our reading of God's Word and our reflection on it, God becomes flesh in us now and thus makes us into living Christs for today.

Let's keep reading God's Word with love and great reverence.

Đói

Lạy Chúa,

những lúc con cảm thấy đói,

xin ban cho con một ai đó đang cần của ăn.

Khi con khát,

xin gởi đến cho con một ai đó đang cần nước uống.

Khi con lạnh lẽo,

xin gởi đến cho con một ai đó đang cần được sưởi.

Khi con bị xúc phạm,

xin ban cho con một ai đó đang cần ủi an.

Khi thập giá của con trở nên nặng nề,

xin ban cho con thập giá của một người khác

để cùng chia sẻ.

Khi con túng nghèo,

xin dẫn đến cho con một người thiếu thốn.

Khi con không có thời giờ,

xin ban cho con ai đó để con giúp họ giây lát.

Khi con nản chí,

xin gởi đến cho con một người cần khích lệ.

Khi con chỉ biết nghĩ đến mình,

xin xoay chuyển tư tưởng con hướng đến tha nhân.

Tin & chia sẻ

Các ngươi hãy ra công làm việc không phải vì của ăn hay hư nát, nhưng vì của ăn tồn tại cho đến cuộc sống đời đời, là của ăn Con Người sẽ ban cho các ngươi. Người là Đấng mà Thiên Chúa Cha đã ghi dấu". Họ liền thưa lại rằng: "Chúng tôi phải làm gì để gọi là làm việc của Thiên Chúa?" Chúa Giêsu đáp: "Đây là công việc của Thiên Chúa, là các ngươi hãy tin vào Đấng Ngài sai đến" (Ga 6,27-29).

 Chúa vẫn hằng quan tâm đến nhu cầu hằng ngày của đoàn chiên Chúa:
- Ngước mắt lên, Đức Giê-su nhìn thấy đông đảo dân chúng đến với mình. Người hỏi ông Phi-líp-phê: "Ta mua đâu ra bánh cho họ ăn đây?
- Người nói với các ông: "Này các chú, không có gì ăn ư? " Các ông trả lời: "Thưa không."Người bảo các ông: "Cứ thả lưới xuống bên phải mạn thuyền đi, thì sẽ bắt được cá." 
-Bước lên bờ, các ông nhìn thấy có sẵn than hồng với cá đặt ở trên, và có cả bánh nữa. Đức Giê-su bảo các ông: "Đem ít cá mới bắt được tới đây! "

Chúa phục sinh ở với từng người. Ở với tôi, để cùng tôi gánh vác cuộc đời. Gần gũi tôi, cùng tôi chia sẻ mọi nỗi niềm, mọi công việc. Trong sự gần gũi này, những gì của Chúa trở thành của tôi: "Hãy chăn dắt chiên Ta!"

Chúa mời gọi tôi: "Đây là công việc của Thiên Chúa, là các ngươi hãy tin vào Đấng Ngài sai đến". Tin Chúa đang ở với con, đang chia sẻ mọi sự với con, để con cũng chia sẻ mọi sự với Chúa.

Sợ

Bỗng cuồng phong thổi lên, biển động mạnh. Khi chèo đi được chừng hai mươi lăm hay ba mươi dặm, thì họ thấy Chúa Giêsu đi trên mặt biển, tiến lại gần thuyền, họ hoảng sợ. Nhưng Người nói với họ: "Chính Thầy đây, đừng sợ". (Ga 6,18-20)

Fluent in 8 languages, the John Paul II often addressed audiences in their native tongue. "He spoke everyone else’s language, and his Latin wasn’t so great," says Gibson.

And he wasn't shy about using the media to get his message out. 'If it doesn’t happen on TV, it doesn’t happen,” John Paul used to say, according to Gibson.

And he was even more effective in person. "Almost everyone who ever met him describes it exactly the same way, that when he was speaking with you, it was as if you were the only person in the world," says Joseph Zwilling, who directs communications for the Catholic Archdiocese of New York.
"He saw in every person a real reflection of the image and likeness of God, and lived that out in a radical way."

Even when he was suffering from Parkinson's late in life, Pope John Paul was unafraid to be seen.
"His willingness to appear in public bearing the effects of Parkinson's reminded the world that for the Christian, suffering is nothing to be ashamed of, or hidden away," says James Martin, a Jesuit writer.

Salvation according to Francis

“The Lord does not save us with a letter, with a decree,
but he has saved us” and continues to save us with “his love”,
restoring human beings “dignity and hope”.

At this point the Pope invited everyone to make “an act of faith”, saying:
“Lord, I believe. I believe in your love.
I believe that your love has saved me.
I believe that your love has given me a dignity that I had not.
I believe that your love gives me hope”.
Here thus it becomes “beautiful to believe in love”,
because “it is the truth. It is the truth of our life”.

It happens, however, that at times “we want to save ourselves and we believe we can do it. 'I save myself!'.
We don't say it, but we live it, just so”.
For example when we think: “I save myself with money. I am secure, I have some money, there is no problem... I have dignity: the dignity of the rich”.
But, Pope Francis interjected, all that “is not enough. Think of the Gospel parable, of that man who had the full granary and said: 'I will make another, to have more and more, and then I will sleep peacefully”. And the Lord responds: 'You fool! You will die tonight'.
That kind of salvation is wrong, it is a temporary, apparent”, like those times when we delude ourselves with thoughts of “salvation by vanity, or by pride”, believing ourselves “powerful”, masquerading “our poverty, our sins in vanity, pride: all things that end, while true salvation has to do with the dignity and hope received thanks to the love of God”, he added referring to the pass of the Gospel of John (3:16-21) proclaimed a few minutes before, who sent his only Son to save us.

The Infinite Value of Life

Some people live long lives, some die very young.
Is a long life better than a short life? 
What truly counts is not the length of our lives
but their quality.

Jesus was in his early thirties when he was killed.
Thérèse de Lisieux was in her twenties when she died.
Anne Frank was a teenager when she lost her life.
But their short lives continue to bear fruit long after their deaths.

A long life is a blessing when it is well lived and leads to gratitude, wisdom, and sanctity.
But some people can live truly full lives even when their years are few.

As we see so many young people die of cancer and AIDS
let us, do everything possible to show our friends
that, though their lives may be short, they are of infinite value.

Người khiển trách các ông không tin và cứng lòng, bởi lẽ các ông không chịu tin những kẻ đã được thấy Người sau khi Người trỗi dậy. Người nói với các ông: “Anh em hãy đi khắp tứ phương thiên hạ, loan báo Tin Mừng cho mọi loài thụ tạo.” (Mc 16,14-15)

Bằng một phong cách đơn sơ, khiêm tốn, vui tươi, gần gũi, tha thiết với người nghèo, ra khỏi lớp vỏ cứng để đến với mọi người, ĐTC Phanxicô đã là nguồn hứng khởi cho niềm tin thức dậy. Tất cả phát xuất từ một đời sống cầu nguyện, chiêm niệm sâu xa.

When Guillermo Marcó visited Pope Francis last month at the Vatican, he noticed a remarkable change in his old friend.
“In Buenos Aires, when I saw him before the conclave, he looked really tired. He was anticipating his retirement, preparing himself for that, not for taking on a new job,” said Fr Marcó. “Of course, we know that the Holy Spirit works through the conclave, but really I’ve now seen the effects of that because I know him so well,” said the Pope’s former press officer, who had five minutes with his old boss at the Vatican last month.

“I could see this amazing transformation in his face; he was glowing and happy and his eyes had this special light in them. He seemed to have an extra strength and without any doubt this is a change brought about by the force of God.”

...The new pope is accustomed to an austere lifestyle and although he has good friends he does not socialise. “He avoids going to eat dinner with people at their home. He’s always been a person whom I’d describe as monkish in his lifestyle. He’s always been quite a solitary person. He looks after his interior life; he gets up at about 5 a.m. to pray. So, at night, he eats an apple, drinks a cup of tea and goes to bed early.” He preferred to visit the poor of the city, something that became a feature of his tenure as archbishop – he is credited with doubling the number of priests visiting the poor barrios of the city.

...“He says you must go out to the fringes of life and see what is going on. You should not wait for the world to come to you,” said Fr Marcó. “He doesn’t see the poor as people he can help but rather as people from whom he can learn. He believes the poor are closer to God than the rest of us; they have a very personal experience of him.”

Thursday in the Octave of Easter, Pope Francis noted how all of the readings speak of amazement and wonder: the crowds' amazement at Peter’s healing of the crippled man and the wonder of the disciples at the Risen Christ’s appearance to them.

"Wonder is a great grace, the grace that God gives us in our encounter with Jesus Christ. It is something that draws us outside of ourselves with joy ... it is not a mere enthusiasm" like that of sports fans "when their favorite team wins", but "it's something deeper". It is having an inner experience of meeting the Living Christ and thinking that it is not possible: "But the Lord helps us understand that is the reality. It is wonderful! "

Pope Francis continued, "of course we cannot live forever in [a state of] wonder. No, we really cannot. But it is the beginning. Then, this astonishment leaves an impression in the soul and spiritual consolation. It is the consolation of those who have encountered Jesus Christ”.

Pope Francis concluded: "First wonder, then spiritual consolation and finally, the last step: peace. Even in the most painful tests, a Christian never loses the peace and presence of Jesus. With a little 'courage' we can pray: 'Lord, grant me this grace which is the hallmark of our encounter with you: spiritual consolation and peace'. A peace that we cannot lose because it is ours, it is the Lord's true peace that cannot be bought or sold. It is a gift from God. This is why we ask for the grace of spiritual consolation and peace of mind, that starts with this joyful wonder of our encounter with Jesus Christ. So be it."

Reflecting God's perfect love

God's love for us is everlasting.
That means that God's love for us existed before we were born and will exist after we have died.
It is an eternal love in which we are embraced.

Living a spiritual life calls us to claim that eternal love for ourselves
so that we can live our temporal loves
- for parents, brothers, sisters, teachers, friends, spouses, and all people who become part of our lives
- as reflections or refractions of God's eternal love.
No fathers or mothers can love their children perfectly.
No husbands or wives can love each other with unlimited love.
There is no human love that is not broken somewhere.

When our broken love is the only love we can have, we are easily thrown into despair,
but when we can live our broken love as a partial reflection of God's perfect, unconditional love,
we can forgive one another our limitations and enjoy together the love we have to offer.

“Urbi et Orbi”

At noon, from the central loggia of the Vatican Basilica, the Holy Father Francis addressed the over 250,000 people overflowing St. Peter's Square and those who were following the celebration by radio or television. He delivered his Easter proclamation—“God’s mercy can make even the driest land become a garden!”—and made a strong appeal for peace throughout the world. He then imparted the “Urbi et Orbi” blessing.

Above all, the desert within, when we have no love for God or neighbour, when we fail to realize that we are guardians of all that the Creator has given us and continues to give us.

Let us accept the grace of Christ’s Resurrection!

...Newness often makes us fearful, including the newness which God brings us, the newness which God asks of us. We are like the Apostles in the Gospel: often we would prefer to hold on to our own security, to stand in front of a tomb, to think about someone who has died, someone who ultimately lives on only as a memory, like the great historical figures from the past. We are afraid of God’s surprises; we are afraid of God’s surprises! He always surprises us!

Dear brothers and sisters, let us not be closed to the newness that God wants to bring into our lives! Are we often weary, disheartened and sad? Do we feel weighed down by our sins? Do we think that we won’t be able to cope? Let us not close our hearts, let us not lose confidence, let us never give up: there are no situations which God cannot change, there is no sin which he cannot forgive if only we open ourselves to him.

...Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome him as a friend, with trust: he is life! If up till now you have kept him at a distance, step forward. He will receive you with open arms.

...And the two men in dazzling clothes tell them something of crucial importance: “Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee… And they remembered his words” (Lk 24:6,8). They are asked to remember their encounter with Jesus, to remember his words, his actions, his life; and it is precisely this loving remembrance of their experience with the Master that enables the women to master their fear and to bring the message of the Resurrection to the Apostles and all the others (cf. Lk 24:9).

...May he teach us each day not to look among the dead for the Living One!

Nét đẹp thập giá

Công trình tạo dựng của Thiên Chúa tuyệt đẹp. Công trình cứu độ của Ngài còn đẹp hơn gấp bội. Đó là nét đẹp của thập giá, tột đỉnh của tình yêu tự hiến.

"...The evangelization has a mystical origin; it is a gift that comes from the cross of Christ, from that open side, from that blood and from that water. The love of Christ, like that of the Trinity of which it is the historical manifestation, is "diffusivum sui", it tends to expand and reach all creatures, "especially those most needy of thy mercy." Christian evangelization is not a conquest, not propaganda; it is the gift of God to the world in his Son Jesus. It is to give the Head the joy of feeling life flow from his heart towards his body, to the point of vivivfying its most distant limbs.

We must do everything possible so that the Church may never look like that complicated and cluttered castle described by Kafka, and the message may come out of it as free and joyous as when the messenger began his run. We know what the impediments are that can restrain the messenger: dividing walls, starting with those that separate the various Christian churches from one another, the excess of bureaucracy, the residue of past ceremonials, laws and disputes, now only debris.

In Revelation, Jesus says that He stands at the door and knocks (Rev 3:20). Sometimes, as noted by our Pope Francis, he does not knock to enter, but knocks from within to go out. To reach out to the "existential suburbs of sin, suffering, injustice, religious ignorance and indifference, and of all forms of misery."As happens with certain old buildings. Over the centuries, to adapt to the needs of the moment, they become filled with partitions, staircases, rooms and closets. The time comes when we realize that all these adjustments no longer meet the current needs, but rather are an obstacle, so we must have the courage to knock them down and return the building to the simplicity and linearity of its origins. This was the mission that was received one day by a man who prayed before the Crucifix of San Damiano: "Go, Francis, and repair my Church".

"Who could ever be up to this task?" wondered aghast the Apostle before the superhuman task of being in the world "the fragrance of Christ"; and here is his reply, that still applies today: "We're not ourselves able to think something as if it came from us; our ability comes from God. He has made us to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; because the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life"(2 Cor 2:16; 3:5-6). May the Holy Spirit, in this moment in which a new time is opening for the Church, full of hope, reawaken in men who are at the window the expectancy of the message, and in the messengers the will to make it reach them, even at the cost of their life."

Dear priests,

may God the Father renew in us

the Spirit of holiness

with whom we have been anointed.



May he renew his Spirit in our hearts,

that this anointing may spread to everyone,

even to those “outskirts”

where our faithful people most look for it

and most appreciate it.

May our people sense

that we are the Lord’s disciples;

may they feel that their names are written

upon our priestly vestments

and that we seek no other identity;

and may they receive

through our words and deeds

the oil of gladness which Jesus,

the Anointed One, came to bring us.

Pope Francis washes women's feet in break with church law?

In his most significant break with tradition yet, Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of two young women at a juvenile detention centre - a surprising departure from church rules that restrict the Holy Thursday ritual to men.



No pope has ever washed the feet of a woman before, and Francis' gesture sparked a debate among some conservatives and liturgical purists, who lamented he had set a "questionable example." Liberals welcomed the move as a sign of greater inclusiveness in the church.

Speaking to the young offenders, including Muslims and Orthodox Christians, Francis said that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples on the eve of his crucifixion in a gesture of love and service.

"This is a symbol, it is a sign. Washing your feet means I am at your service," Francis told the group, aged 14 to 21, at the Casal del Marmo detention facility in Rome.

In a video released by the Vatican, the 76-year-old Francis was shown kneeling on the stone floor as he poured water from a silver chalice over the feet of a dozen youths: black, white, male, female, even feet with tattoos. Then, after drying each one with a cotton towel, he bent over and kissed it.

Previous popes carried out the Holy Thursday rite in Rome's grand St. John Lateran basilica, choosing 12 priests to represent the 12 apostles whose feet Christ washed during the Last Supper before his crucifixion.

Before he became pope, as archbishop of Buenos Aires, the former Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio celebrated the ritual foot-washing in jails, hospitals or hospices - part of his ministry to the poorest and most marginalized of society. He often involved women. Photographs show him washing the feet of a woman holding her newborn child in her arms.

That Francis would include women in his inaugural Holy Thursday Mass as pope was remarkable, however, given that current liturgical rules exclude women.

Canon lawyer Edward Peters, who is an adviser to the Holy See's top court, noted in a blog that the Congregation for Divine Worship sent a letter to bishops in 1988 making clear that "the washing of the feet of chosen men ... represents the service and charity of Christ, who came 'not to be served, but to serve.'"

While bishops have successfully petitioned Rome over the years for an exemption to allow women to participate, the rules on the issue are clear, Peters said.

"By disregarding his own law in this matter, Francis violates, of course, no divine directive," Peters wrote. "What he does do, I fear, is set a questionable example."

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said he didn't want to wade into a canonical dispute over the matter. However, he noted that in a "grand solemn celebration" of the rite, only men are included because Christ washed the feet of his 12 apostles, all of whom were male.

"Here, the rite was for a small, unique community made up also of women," Lombardi wrote in an email. "Excluding the girls would have been inopportune in light of the simple aim of communicating a message of love to all, in a group that certainly didn't include experts on liturgical rules."

Others on the more liberal side of the debate welcomed the example Francis set.

"The pope's washing the feet of women is hugely significant because including women in this part of the Holy Thursday Mass has been frowned on - and even banned - in some dioceses," said the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and author of "The Jesuit Guide."

"It shows the all-embracing love of Christ, who ministered to all he met: man or woman, slave or free, Jew or Gentile."

For some, restricting the rite to men is in line with the church's restriction on ordaining women priests. Church teaching holds that only men should be ordained because Christ's apostles were male.

"This is about the ordination of women, not about their feet," wrote the Rev. John Zuhlsdorf, a traditionalist blogger. Liberals "only care about the washing of the feet of women, because ultimately they want women to do the washing."

Still, Francis has made clear he doesn't favour ordaining women. In his 2011 book, "On Heaven and Earth," then-Cardinal Bergoglio said there were solid theological reasons why the priesthood was reserved to men: "Because Jesus was a man."

On this Holy Thursday, however, Francis had a simple message for the young inmates, whom he greeted one-by-one after the Mass, giving each an Easter egg.

"Don't lose hope," Francis said. "Understand? With hope you can always go on."

One young man then asked why he had come to visit them.

Francis responded that it was to "help me to be humble, as a bishop should be."

The gesture, he said, came "from my heart. Things from the heart don't have an explanation."

God's Covenant

God made a covenant with us. The word covenant means "coming together." God wants to come together with us.

In many of the stories in the Hebrew Bible, we see that God appears as a God who defends us against our enemies, protects us against dangers, and guides us to freedom. God is God-for-us.

When Jesus comes a new dimension of the covenant is revealed. In Jesus, God is born, grows to maturity, lives, suffers, and dies as we do. God is God-with-us.

Finally, when Jesus leaves he promises the Holy Spirit. In the Holy Spirit, God reveals the full depth of the covenant. God wants to be as close to us as our breath. God wants to breathe in us, so that all we say, think and do is completely inspired by God. God is God-within-us.

Thus God's covenant reveals to us to how much God loves us.

And it was precisely by drawing inspiration from the Gospel passage from Matthew which foretells the betrayal of Judas Iscariot that Pope Francis – in his brief Homily at the Mass he celebrated on Wednesday morning, 27 March, in the Chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae – put people on guard against gossip with an explicit invitation: “Never speak poorly of other people”.

(Vatican Radio/VIS) The Mass of the Lord's Supper that Pope Francis will celebrate on Holy Thursday in the chapel of the Casal del Marmo Penitential Institute for Minors (IPM) will be, by his express desire, very simple.

Around 10 girls and 40 boys will take part in the Mass. The Pope will wash the feet of 12 of them, who will be chosen from different nationalities and diverse religious confessions. The youth will also say the readings and the prayers of the faithful.

After the Mass, the Pope will meet with the youth and the IPM's personnel in the Institute's gym. Around 150 persons are expected to attend, including the Minister for Justice, Paola Severino, accompanied by the Head of the Department of Justice for Minors, Caterina Chinnici, the Commander of the Institute's Penitentiary Police, Saulo Patrizi, and the Institute's director, Liana Giambartolomei.

The youth will give the Pope a wooden crucifix and kneeler, which they made themselves in the Institute's workshop. The Holy Father will bring Easter eggs and “colomba” (the traditional Italian Easter cake in the shape of a dove) for all.

Given the intimate nature of the pastoral visit, journalists will be restricted to the area outside the building and no live coverage will be transmitted.

Pope Francis was inspired by the scene of today's Gospel, in which Judas criticizes Mary, sister of Lazarus, for anointing Jesus' feet with three hundred grams of precious perfume: it would be better - says Judas – to sell it and give the proceeds to the poor.

John noted in the Gospel that Judas was not interested in the poor, but in stealing the money. Yet, Pope Francis said, "Jesus did not say: 'You are a thief.’”. Instead “he was patient with Judas, trying to draw him closer through patience, his love.

During Holy Week, we would do well to think of the patience of God, the patience that God has with each one of us, with our weaknesses, our sins. " "The patience of God is a mystery!", Pope Francis said. "How much patience he has with us! We do so many things, but He is patient”.

The Ways to Self-knowledge

"Know yourself" is good advice. But to know ourselves doesn't mean to analyse ourselves. Sometimes we want to know ourselves as if we were machines that could be taken apart and put back together at will. At certain critical times in our lives it might be helpful to explore in some detail the events that led us to our crises, but we make a mistake when we think that we can ever completely understand ourselves and explain the full meaning of our lives to others.

Solitude, silence, and prayer are often the best ways to self-knowledge. Not because they offer solutions for the complexity of our lives but because they bring us in touch with our sacred center, where God dwells. That sacred center may not be analysed. It is the place of adoration, thanksgiving, and praise.

Simon Phêrô hỏi Người: "Thưa Thầy, Thầy đi đâu?" Chúa Giêsu trả lời: "Nơi Thầy đi, nay con chưa thể theo tới đó được, nhưng sau này con sẽ theo Thầy". Phêrô thưa lại: "Tại sao con lại không theo Thầy ngay bây giờ được! Con sẽ liều mạng sống con vì Thầy". Chúa Giêsu nói: "Con liều mạng sống vì Thầy ư? Thật, Thầy nói thật cho con biết: trước khi gà gáy, con đã chối Thầy ba lần".(Ga 13,36-38)

Bấy giờ Maria lấy một cân dầu thơm, dầu cam tùng hảo hạng, và xức chân Chúa Giêsu, rồi lấy tóc mình mà lau. Hương thơm toả đầy nhà. Một môn đệ là Giuđa Iscariô, kẻ sẽ phản nộp Người, liền nói: "Sao không bán dầu thơm đó lấy ba trăm đồng mà cho người nghèo khó?" Hắn nói thế không phải vì lo lắng cho người nghèo khó đâu, mà vì hắn là tên trộm cắp, lại được giữ túi tiền, nên bớt xén các khoản tiền người ta bỏ vào đó. (Ga 12,3-7)

Maria không tiếc gì với Chúa, bà đổ cả một cân dầu cam tùng hảo hạng chỉ để xức chân Chúa.

Phêrô cũng chẳng tiếc gì với Chúa: Con liều mạng sống vì Thầy. Đấy là cái tâm của ông, dù sau đó ông yếu đuối chối Thầy...

Giuđa thì so đo tính toán, bớt xén của chung để giữ cho mình, cuối cùng đi đến kết thúc bi đát.

Còn con thì thế nào? Vì yêu, con cho Chúa hết, không tiếc rẻ điều gì... thật khó nói được câu này!
Nhưng ít ra, con cũng cố làm được một chút gì đó, trong hiện tại, vì yêu Chúa, vì yêu thương anh em con...
Xin được cố gắng từng chút một, sửa đổi từng chút một...

The Pope said, on Jesus’ entry in Jerusalem he was received with great joy as people waved their palms and olive branches. He awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter in the eyes of the world.
